As you discuss principles of digital citizenship with your children, don’t forget to include your parents and grandparents in the conversation. Their ability to safely navigate the Internet will not only help their personal security, but possibly help them stay more connected with you and your children.
Ask your parents how they are using connected technology. Send them links and materials to help them learn how to safely navigate and interact on the web.
If they use Facebook or other social networks, make sure they are connected with your children (if they have accounts) and other family members. Let them know of any blogs you or your children write.
Talk to them about any problems or issues they’ve been having with technology. As you find good resources for topics you want to discuss with your own family, send the materials on to your parents.
Make sure they have anti-virus software and remind them to update it frequently.
